WHATSAPP TESTING "ONLINE" STATUS HIDDEN OP ANDROID

WhatsApp introduced the ability to hide your last seen from specific contacts in November, but the push for privacy didn't stop there.

This month, the app announced a feature that will hide your "online" status from specific contacts or everyone. This feature will be available soon in WhatsApp Beta for Android.

According to WABetainfo, Android version 2.22.16.12 will give users access to new privacy settings. Users can access the new feature by opening the app and going to Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen and Online reveals the option to choose who can see you when you're online.

This option is directly tied to the Last Seen setting, as you can only choose whether your presence is known to everyone or only those who saw you last. The last online status link may seem odd, but it makes sense.

If you don't want someone to see the last time you were online, then you don't want them to see your online status. So it saves the effort of configuring two different settings. But this is a feature that should further bridge the gap between the official WhatsApp app and mods like GB WhatsApp that users can install for more privacy options.

The update doesn't just fix the shake-ups – feature-rich rivals like Telegram have had similar capabilities for a long time. So while it's good to see it finally coming to WhatsApp, the new experience is still in beta. You have to wait for it to reach a stable channel to use it.
