Best VR Fitness Accessories: Elevate your workouts in virtual reality
Take your fitness regimen to the next level with our guide to the best VR fitness accessories. It's a familiar challenge—finding a way to get a proper cardio workout in at home. There are many machines designed to achieve this goal, but treadmills, bikes, and elliptical machines are expensive, bulky, and, let's be honest, boring.
Enter the virtual reality of the Oculus Quest 2 (now Meta Quest 2) wireless headset, which can turn a small patch in your living room into your own fitness center. VR provides customized, on-demand fitness training in locations as diverse as a beautiful beach or the surface of Mars.
Boring, no. Quest 2's fitness options are varied and effective, but they all share the same problem: exercising with VR goggles can be uncomfortable. The good news is that it doesn't have to be that way. Grab these accessories and you'll create a welcoming environment for your sweaty efforts. The even better news is that none of these bonuses will break you; a big increase in quality of life, a small investment of money. And isn't healthier worth it?
If you're only getting into VR for the fitness options, you'll want to brush up on some important basics. First, here's how to avoid motion sickness in VR. Maybe this isn't a problem when you're working out, because the workout routines move you around in real space, but not in virtual places. However, it's good information.
When you start doing other VR activities. More practical is how to clean your VR headset and lenses - they sweat a lot, very quickly, and proper cleaning will not only keep the headset fresh in the spring but also ensure you always have sharp and clearly defined images.
It's also worth noting that you don't need to use Quest 2 to work in VR; technically, the apps work with any headset. The Quest 2 is the best choice in our opinion because it's both wireless and affordable, but check out our review of the best VR headsets to help you choose the technology that's right for you.
Then, when you want to work up a sweat, check out the items on this shopping list. 1. Place the liner KIWI design Oculus Quest 2 / Meta Quest 2 vented insert (Image credit: KIWI Design) Practice a few times in VR and you'll soon discover the biggest problem: sweating. Sealing half of your face in the headset isn't a problem when watching movies or playing games, but the heat and sweat from training will fog up the lenses in no time.
Check the forums and you'll find plenty of homemade solutions, everything from wiping your lenses with saliva to sticking maxi pads to your forehead. However, we believe the simplest solution is a vented liner that allows air to escape from the mask without letting light in.
There are many options, but we prefer this one from Kiwi (opens in a new tab) for its efficiency and ease of installation. 2. Prescription lenses VR Lens Lab Oculus Quest 2 VR lens insert (Image credit: VR Lens Lab) For any VR headset to work properly, its lenses need to be at the right distance from your eyes.
The Quest 2 has an insert that adds a little extra space to help compensate for anyone wearing glasses, and it works well for most VR uses. But why not just skip the glasses altogether? Several companies offer prescription lenses for the Quest 2, and they are much cheaper than you might expect.
Installation takes only a few seconds; remove the standard lens and add prescriptions. This process is easily reversible when multiple people are sharing the headset. We've had great results with the VR Lens Lab (opens in a new tab), even with a strong prescription.
A 6-foot circular yoga mat SCHRINER large round yoga mat (6 feet) with a woman practicing yoga on it. (Image credit: SCHRINER) advertisement It's surprisingly easy to come back when you're in VR. You can be sure you're at a dead stop, only to find you've traveled a few feet to the side. Quest 2 has visual cues to let you know you're close to the edge of your playground, but in our experience, a physical boundary is better at keeping you where you need to be.
Practice on a yoga mat and you'll feel like you're close to the no-fly zone. Quest recommends a 6-foot space circle for practice, so we recommend a large Schriner mat (opens in new tab), but you can use whatever size and shape suit your situation. 4. Headphones Image 1 of 2 Amavasion VR Gaming Headset (Image credit: Amavasion) (Image credit: Amavasion).
The whole point of using VR as opposed to your phone or laptop is immersion, so get it right. The headphones will shut out the real world and let you focus on your workout, but the Quest 2 doesn't support Bluetooth (officially), so your wireless headphones won't go. Wired headphones work, but the dangling cable really bothers us when we're working. Custom headphones like this one from Amavision (opens in a new tab) split the buttons so that each can be plugged into either side of the headset with an extra short cable. And for less than $20, it's a dud.
